What is Transshipment?

Transshipment is the process of transferring cargo from one vessel (or aircraft) to another at an intermediate hub port, en route to its final destination.

It is used when there is no direct service between the origin and destination, or when routing through a major hub provides faster or more cost-effective service.

CCK manages all transshipment arrangements — you simply hand over your cargo and we handle the rest.

When Is Transshipment Used?

  • No direct shipping service between origin and destination
  • Destination is a smaller or regional port not served by major carriers
  • Trade restrictions require rerouting through a neutral hub
  • Cost savings available through hub-and-spoke routing
  • Faster overall transit via a strategically located hub
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between direct shipping and transshipment?
Direct shipping means your cargo travels on a single vessel/aircraft from origin to destination. Transshipment involves the cargo being transferred at one or more intermediate hub ports before reaching its final destination. While it adds a transfer step, it opens up access to destinations with no direct service.
Does transshipment increase the risk of damage or delay?
With professional handling at reputable transshipment hubs, risks are minimised. Our team carefully selects hubs with strong track records and monitors cargo at each transfer point. Transit times are factored into your shipping plan upfront.
Can transshipment be used for restricted trade routes?
In many cases, yes. Transshipment through a neutral hub can facilitate shipments to markets where direct trading restrictions apply, subject to full compliance with all applicable sanctions and regulations.
How do I track my cargo during transshipment?
Our real-time tracking system monitors your cargo at every leg of the journey — from origin to each hub and through to the final destination. You receive updates at each key milestone.
